Ford Falcon BFFord Australia’s BF Falcon series was released in 2005 to replace the BA series. On the showroom floor the BF Falcon may not look much different from the model it replaced but once behind the wheel the changes are evident. At the time of its release Ford Australia claimed the BF series was the most refined and sophisticated range ever built, even though it looked very similar to the BA range. The development of the BF was based on market feedback received on the BA which had been in the marketplace since 2002. It resulted in a series that focused on performance with a more powerful, quieter and smoother ride than previous models. Some motoring critics were impressed with the optional gearbox upgrade to a 6-speed ZF gearbox from Germany. This was the first model of the Ford Australia range to offer this 6-speed gearbox. Even the base model is powerful with a 190kW 6-cylinder engine. The BF XR range, takes further leaps forward with performance available with a 6-speed manual transmission or the optional upgrade to the 6-speed automatic transmission. Although most change in the new range from customer feedback, the performance range of XR’s have some significant development from the Falcon V8 Supercar. Motoring critic, Feann Torr, said the new automatic transmission’s performance in the XR range was as good if not better that having manual transmission. “The upgraded L6 turbo engine (now with 245kW and 480Nm @ 2000rpm) combined with the ZF automatic gearbox feels quicker than the manual 6-speed.’’ Ford’s claims of sophistication stems from the prestige drive the car is renowned for, being quieter and smoother. Road and engine noise has also been greatly reduced with effective dampening around the cabin. The smoothness came from the new wheels which is the most significant changes to the exterior look of the vehicle. There are also up to four new paint colours available. The BF series is available in the entry level XT sedan and wagon, Futura sedan and wagon, performance models XR6, XR6 Turbo and XR8, and the long wheelbase models Fairmont, Fairmont Ghia, Fairmont G8 and LTD. The BF utes come in XL, XLS, RTV, XR6, XR6 Turbo and XR8. To look at the BF there was little change to the exterior from the BA model, but Ford Australia director of design Simon Butterworth said the exterior has been refined from the successful 2002 models.
